Sri Lanka Aims to Boost Overseas Employment to 340,000 in 2025

Colombo: The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has announced that 311,000 Sri Lankans secured overseas employment in 2024, marking a significant contribution to the nation's foreign remittances.

This year, the SLBFE is targeting a 12% increase in overseas job placements, aiming to send 340,000 Sri Lankans abroad. The ambitious goal was unveiled by SLBFE Chairman Kosala Wickramasinghe during an awareness program for newly licensed foreign employment agents held on January 23.

To achieve this target, the bureau plans to streamline recruitment processes and address fraudulent practices within the industry. Wickramasinghe emphasized the importance of regulation, highlighting instances of malpractice by certain licensed agencies. Legal measures will be enforced to protect workers and maintain the integrity of the recruitment system.

The SLBFE's efforts are expected to enhance foreign remittances, a vital economic lifeline for Sri Lanka. The initiative aligns with broader strategies to stabilize the country's economy and improve opportunities for Sri Lankans seeking employment abroad.

As part of its commitment, the bureau will also focus on raising awareness among job seekers and strengthening partnerships with foreign employment agents to ensure safe and legitimate overseas employment opportunities.
