Spotify Down: Users Across the Globe Hit by Widespread Streaming Outage

New York, April 17 — Spotify, the world’s largest music streaming platform, faced a significant service disruption on Wednesday morning, leaving tens of thousands of users unable to access content across multiple countries.

According to Downdetector.com, which tracks online service outages, more than 40,000 users reported issues beginning around 8:55 a.m. ET, with problems peaking shortly thereafter. Affected users reported a range of issues, including app crashes, website errors, and non-functional playback and search features.

Global Impact, Widespread Frustration

The outage was not limited to one region—users from the U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany, Sweden, Italy, Brazil, and Mexico all reported similar problems. Many encountered 502 and 504 HTTP errors when attempting to access the Spotify website, with messages like “Server Error” and “Upstream request timeout” appearing frequently.

While streaming of both music and podcasts was interrupted, some users were still able to access downloaded or cached content on their mobile or desktop apps.

Spotify Responds

Spotify’s official @SpotifyStatus account on X (formerly Twitter) acknowledged the issue early on. “We’re aware of some issues right now and are checking them out!” the company posted at 8:45 a.m. ET. In a later update at 10:39 a.m. ET, the team assured users: “We are aware of the outage and working to resolve it as soon as possible. The reports of this being a security hack are false.”

A Spotify spokesperson later confirmed that the outage began at approximately 6:20 a.m. ET and was fully resolved by 11:45 a.m. ET, though no specific cause was disclosed.

No Security Breach Involved

Amid circulating rumors online, Spotify firmly denied any claims of a security breach or hacking attempt, labeling them as “false.” The platform emphasized that the issue was purely technical.

What’s Next?

While service has since been restored, users have called for greater transparency regarding the cause of the outage and preventive steps Spotify might take moving forward. As more people rely on digital streaming for music, podcasts, and entertainment, reliability remains crucial to maintaining user trust.
