Hotel worker arrested for stealing foreign currency from Dutch tourist

Police said the incident took place on the evening of 11 November 2025, while the tourist filed an official complaint on 13 November. The victim, who was staying with another woman in a special guest room at a hotel in the Colombo Fort Police Division, discovered that Dirhams and Euros worth around Rs. 330,000 had gone missing.
The complaint, forwarded through the Tourist Police, prompted officers to launch an immediate investigation. A 41-year-old hotel worker from Kandana was arrested as a result.
According to police, the suspect admitted during questioning that he stole the money while the guests were out and later transferred the foreign currency through a financial institution in Ja-Ela.
The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (14), while further investigations continue.
