Remanded Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa Transferred to National Hospital Cardiology Unit
Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, who remains in remand custody at Welikada Prison, has been admitted to the Cardiology Unit of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo for specialized medical care.
Her hospital admission follows earlier medical assessments while in prison custody. On October 8, she was examined by a prison medical specialist regarding an eye ailment, leading to her transfer to the National Eye Hospital the following day, October 9, for specialized treatment before prison authorities returned her to custody.
Prior to her detention, the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court had dismissed an anticipatory bail application submitted by Rajapaksa. The application sought to prevent an arrest by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division over ongoing investigations into the bank account of the Siriliya Saviya Fund.
Officers attached to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption subsequently arrested the wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa on October 7 at her residence along Poorwarama Road in Kirulapone. Anti-graft investigators executed the arrest after questioning her for almost two hours regarding allegations of financial irregularities and questionable transactions connected to the Siriliya Saviya Fund.
