Colombo, Sri Lanka – A significant narcotics haul, totaling over 800kg of drugs, was recovered by the Sri Lanka Navy after being found floating on the seas off the southern coast. The recovered parcels were brought to the Tangalle fisheries harbour last evening, and the exact contents of the 51 packages were revealed by the Navy today.
The packages contained a total of 670 kg of ICE (Crystal Methamphetamine), 156 kg of heroin, and 12 kg of Hashis, according to the Sri Lanka Navy Spokesman. The overall quantity comprised over 50 floating parcels suspected to contain drugs.
The drug consignment is suspected to belong to the notorious drug trafficker known as ‘Unakuruwe Shantha’.
This successful recovery followed an extensive search operation lasting 32 days. The operation was conducted by the Navy and the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB), under the direct supervision of the Inspector General of Police, targeting the Dondra and Tangalle sea areas.
The search operations began after the Director of the PNB, SSP Hemal Prashantha, received information in early September regarding an attempt to smuggle a consignment of drugs into the country using three vessels.
Authorities faced difficulty locating the smuggling vessels. During the operations, authorities contacted the crews of the vessels in question; however, the crews did not provide any specific information.
It was also revealed that the VMS (Vessel Monitoring System) installed on the vessels had been deactivated to conceal their locations. Although the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) also participated in the operation, no information was obtained regarding the whereabouts of the three vessels.
