Drunk Driver Kills Police Officer on New Year’s Eve in Ambalantota
A drunk driver killed a police officer in Ambalantota on New Year’s Eve after ignoring police orders. Two individuals have been arrested; investigations ongoing.
A police officer was killed after being run over by a drunk driver during a roadblock in Ambalantota on New Year’s Eve, authorities confirmed.
The fatal incident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on January 1, 2026, near the bridge over the Walawe Ganga. Police said the vehicle, which was traveling toward Ambalantota, failed to stop despite orders from officers and struck Police Constable M. Sarath Kumara, who was on duty.
Constable Kumara, a father of two from Weeriyagama, Sooriyawewa, had recently been transferred to Embilipitiya Police Station and was scheduled to leave Ambalantota on January 3. A farewell ceremony had been planned for him on the day of the accident.
A Civil Security Force officer on duty at the roadblock was also injured and is receiving treatment at Ambalantota Hospital.
Police later located the vehicle near Ambalantota town. The driver and a passenger, both reportedly heavily intoxicated, were arrested at the scene. The Ambalantota Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
