Bihar Teen Presumed Dead and Cremated Returns Home Alive After Alleged Kidnapping

Darbhanga, Bihar – April 19, 2025: In a shocking turn of events, a 17-year-old boy who was presumed dead and cremated over a month ago in Bihar's Darbhanga district has returned home alive, triggering both disbelief and a police investigation.

Authorities had earlier believed the teenager had died in a train accident on February 26, after a mutilated body—missing a hand and a leg—was found along the railway tracks in the Allalpatti area. The body was handed over to the boy’s family and cremated after officials confirmed the remains to be his. The family had also received Rs 4 lakh in government compensation for the presumed death.

However, on Thursday, the boy appeared before the Darbhanga District Court, claiming he had been kidnapped.

In his court statement, the boy said he was playing cricket in his locality on February 8 when three or four men approached him and pressed a cloth over his face, after which he lost consciousness. He later realized he had been taken across the border to Nepal, where he was held captive.

The teen claimed he managed to escape from his captors and contacted his brother via video call to inform him he was alive. His brother then travelled to Nepal to bring him back home. Instead of going to the police immediately, the family chose to bring the matter directly to the court.

Darbhanga SDPO Amit Kumar confirmed the case is under investigation.

“We are trying to ascertain the identity of the person who was cremated. The boy, who has now returned, will also be questioned to verify his claims,” he told reporters.

Locals say the family had initially filed a missing complaint on February 8 at the Mabbi police station—weeks before the unidentified body was found and mistaken as the teen.

Police are expected to conduct DNA testing on the remains that were cremated and will also verify the boy’s claims about his captivity in Nepal.
