Two people have been killed and 22 others injured after a car drove into a crowd in the eastern German city of Leipzig on Monday afternoon, according to local authorities.

Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung confirmed that the suspected driver, a 33-year-old German citizen, has been arrested. Authorities said the motive behind the incident is still unclear.

Police reported that the vehicle struck pedestrians in the central Grimmaische Straße area before continuing through Augustusplatz and toward the market area. Emergency services rushed to the scene as multiple casualties were reported.

Fire chief Axel Shuh stated that 22 people were injured, including two in serious condition. The victims who died were identified by prosecutors as a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man, both German nationals.

Officials in the state of Saxony, including regional leader Michael Kretschmer, said the suspect has a history of mental health issues. However, investigators have not yet confirmed a clear motive.

Police spokesperson Susanne Lübcke described the incident as a “violent rampage” and said it is being treated as the act of a lone individual. Authorities also stated there is currently no indication of an ongoing threat to public safety.

Investigations are continuing as police examine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
