Trump Hosts Netanyahu in Florida Amid Critical Middle East Talks on Gaza Ceasefire and Regional Security

US President Donald Trump is set to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Florida on Monday as both leaders pivot their attention to urgent Middle East issues, with the fragile Gaza ceasefire at the center of discussions. This marks their sixth meeting since Trump’s return to office 11 months ago and comes at a pivotal moment for the region’s future.

The two allies are expected to address a range of contentious topics, including the stalled implementation of the 20-point Gaza ceasefire agreement, Iran’s alleged rearmament efforts following its summer conflict with Israel, Hezbollah’s influence in Lebanon, and how to engage with Syria’s emerging government. While the US has remained Israel’s staunchest military and diplomatic supporter throughout the two-year war in Gaza, recent policy divergences—particularly regarding the ceasefire’s next steps—have raised questions about the alignment between Washington and Tel Aviv.

Under the proposed ceasefire roadmap, January is slated for Phase Two: the establishment of a Palestinian technocratic government, deployment of an international security force, full disarmament of Hamas, Israeli troop withdrawal, and the start of Gaza’s reconstruction. However, Netanyahu’s government has signaled resistance, insisting Hamas must fully disarm before any withdrawal occurs—a stance Hamas rejects, demanding simultaneous progress toward Palestinian statehood. Despite signing the ceasefire plan that acknowledges Palestinian sovereignty, Netanyahu and his cabinet have repeatedly ruled out an independent Palestinian state.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. As winter storms batter the territory, hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians remain in flimsy tents, vulnerable to freezing temperatures and flooding. The Hamas-run health ministry reported the death of a two-month-old infant from the cold—the third such fatality since December 10—with 17 others killed by collapsing storm-damaged structures. The UN and aid groups accuse Israel of obstructing full humanitarian access, though Israel maintains it is facilitating increased aid deliveries.

Meanwhile, violence persists despite the ceasefire. According to Gaza’s health authorities, at least 414 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the 80 days since the truce began, while three Israeli soldiers have died in attacks attributed to Hamas. Israel claims its operations respond only to ceasefire violations and continues to demand the return of Ran Gvili’s body—the last deceased hostage still in Gaza—three days after the ceasefire’s effective date.

Trump’s mediation may prove decisive in breaking the deadlock. One sticking point is Israel’s opposition to Turkey’s inclusion in the proposed international security force, as few nations have volunteered. Netanyahu is also expected to lobby Trump for approval of potential military strikes against Iran, which Israel believes is rebuilding its missile capabilities after the joint US-Israel strikes on its nuclear sites this summer.

Adding to tensions, Israeli ministers have recently described settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank as a form of de facto annexation—effectively ending prospects for Palestinian statehood. While Trump has previously opposed formal annexation, Israeli media suggest Netanyahu may seek to revisit the idea.

As Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian declared his country in “all-out war” with Israel, the US, and Europe, the Florida summit could shape whether diplomacy or escalation defines the region’s next chapter. With lives hanging in the balance and peace hanging by a thread, global attention is fixed on whether Trump and Netanyahu can find common ground—or deepen the divide.
