In Pakistan, U.N. starts damage assessment

A U.N. spokesperson in Islamabad said the U.N. Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan had sent vehicles to the sites that were targeted in Pakistani-administered Kashmir, as part of their mandate.

Among the structures hit in the capital, Muzaffarabad, was Bilal Mosque, where local official Mudasser Farooq said at least one person died.

Created in 1949 to monitor an early India-Pakistan ceasefire in Kashmir, UNMOGIP is one of the longest-standing U.N. monitoring missions.

As of February 2025, it had 106 members including 68 civilians and 37 experts on mission including troops and police from Croatia, the Philippines and South Korea. (Reuters)
