The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to recruit 18,853 graduates and youth into the state service, as part of the government’s efforts to tackle rising unemployment.
The proposal was presented following a recommendation by a special committee chaired by the Secretary to the Prime Minister. According to Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, the recruitment will be conducted without political interference, addressing long-standing concerns about transparency in public sector hiring.
Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held today (April 8), Minister Jayatissa emphasized that this decision comes in response to high unemployment rates caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and recent political and economic crises.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, has allocated Rs. 10 billion in the 2025 Budget to facilitate these appointments.
The recruitment process will be overseen by the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government.
