New York, April 14 – A 17-year-old teen, Neo Secaira, was fatally shot in what police say was a tragic murder-suicide driven by jealousy. The incident unfolded Saturday night in Bayside, Queens, when Secaira arrived to pick up his 19-year-old girlfriend, only to be met by her jealous ex-boyfriend, 28-year-old US Marine Frank Liu.
Authorities say Liu, who was reportedly distraught over the breakup and dealing with emotional distress from losing military colleagues overseas, opened fire, killing Secaira before turning the gun on himself. Police responded to the scene around 10 p.m., finding both men with gunshot wounds.
Secaira sustained multiple shots to the chest, while Liu had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Both were transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
The girlfriend, who has not been publicly identified, was present during the attack and reportedly witnessed the entire horrific scene.
The tragedy has left families shattered. Secaira's mother, Yolanda Secaira, recounted the devastating moment a woman came to her home and informed her of her son’s death, stating, “She said, ‘Your son has curly hair?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ She said, ‘My son killed your son.’”
Liu's father, Huili Liu, expressed disbelief over his son’s actions, saying, “I say, why? It’s just one girl. There are many girls.”
The young woman had reportedly lived in the Liu family’s apartment for several months while pursuing her studies.
Photos of Secaira posted on social media show a smiling teenager with curly hair, remembered now by friends and family as full of promise, his life cut tragically short.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case.
