Man Shot Dead by Police After Two-Car Crash on A11 Near Thetford

A man has been shot dead by police following a two-vehicle collision on the A11 near Thetford in Norfolk on Sunday evening.

Norfolk Police responded to the crash at approximately 20:35 GMT after receiving reports that the driver of one of the vehicles had fled the scene carrying what witnesses described as a handgun. Armed response units were immediately deployed to the area.

According to authorities, the suspect was shot by officers from “a short distance away.” Despite emergency medical efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The stretch of the A11 known as London Road remained closed in both directions well into Monday morning, with traffic diversions in place. Forensic teams were seen examining the carriageway, and BBC Norfolk reporter Jack Maclean described a heavy police presence near the Brandon Road roundabout, with cones and marked vehicles blocking access.

Norfolk Police confirmed they have referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as part of standard procedure whenever a firearm is discharged. Assistant Chief Constable David Buckley emphasized the rarity of such incidents, stating, “Our highly trained armed officers deploy to hundreds of firearms-related calls each year, but incidents where police discharge firearms are thankfully incredibly rare.”

He added that the force is fully cooperating with the IOPC investigation and has already handed over all body-worn video footage and 999 call recordings to ensure transparency. Police confirmed they are not seeking any other individuals in connection with the incident.

The IOPC has launched an independent investigation, with investigators dispatched to the scene shortly after the event. In a statement, the IOPC said, “Despite the man receiving treatment for his injuries, he sadly died at the scene,” and noted that evidence collection is in its initial phase.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
