Kandy, April 16 — The official state oil-anointing ceremony for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year is scheduled to take place this morning at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy.
According to New Year customs, the ceremony will be held at the auspicious time of 9:04 a.m., in line with astrological guidance. Participants are expected to wear green attire, face the north, place Neem (kohomba) leaves on their heads, and stand on kolon leaves during the ritual.
This year’s state ceremony will be conducted at the Natha Devalaya grounds, within the Sacred Tooth Relic temple premises. The oil-anointing ritual is a central part of the Avurudu tradition, symbolizing the invocation of blessings for good health, longevity, and prosperity in the year ahead.
Meanwhile, the final ritual of the New Year—the auspicious planting of a sapling—is scheduled for 10:16 a.m. on April 18, marking the conclusion of the Avurudu festivities.
