Sri Lanka Weather Today: Afternoon Thundershowers, 75mm Heavy Rain in Several Provinces
Showers or thundershowers are expected to develop at several places across most parts of the island after 1.00 p.m. today (18), according to the Department of Meteorology. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some locations in the Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee and Mullaitivu districts.
Showers may also occur in the coastal areas of the Puttalam, Mannar and Jaffna districts during the morning hours. Meanwhile, misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning, the department added.
The general public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damage caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Those in the affected areas are advised to remain alert, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours when thunderstorm activity is most intense, and to avoid open spaces and tall trees when lightning is present.
This weather pattern reflects the typical afternoon thunderstorm activity associated with the ongoing inter-monsoonal conditions, and the public is encouraged to stay updated with the latest forecasts from the Department of Meteorology.
