Cricket fans eager to watch the Indian Premier League (IPL) live at stadiums are in for a significant price hike, as the central government has increased the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on IPL tickets to 40%. This new tax structure, which puts IPL tickets in the highest GST slab alongside luxury goods, racetracks, and casinos, is set to take effect from September 22, 2025. The change in the GST structure was announced on Wednesday, April 3rd. Previously, IPL tickets were taxed at 28%, but under the new framework, they will now be subject to a 40% tax. This steep increase will lead to a major price rise for cricket enthusiasts nationwide. Impact on Ticket Prices: A ₹500 ticket, which previously cost ₹640 with 28% GST, will now cost ₹700, marking a ₹60 increase. A ₹1,000 ticket, which was ₹1,280 with 28% GST, will now be priced at ₹1,400. This is an additional ₹120, representing a 12% increase in the effective cost. For a ₹2,000 ticket, the price will go up to ₹2,800 from the earlier ₹2,560, a ₹240 increase. Why the Higher Tax Bracket for IPL? This new GST structure places the IPL and other high-value sporting events in the same category as industries historically viewed as luxury or non-essential. This marks a substantial shift in the taxation of sports entertainment, effectively linking match viewing to the consumption of products like tobacco or services such as betting. While framed under revenue alignment, this hike makes a clear distinction between commercial tournaments and grassroots sports. The 40% rate specifically impacts the IPL and other premium leagues, whereas tickets for regular cricket matches will continue to be taxed at just 18%. The increase means that watching star players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni in action at the stadium will become considerably more expensive for fans.
India will head into next month’s Men’s Asia Cup as one of the clear favourites to lift the T20 title for the second time. Pakistan, meanwhile, are under pressure after their recent 202-run defeat to West Indies, where they were bowled out for just 92. On paper, India look strong to extend their dominance over their arch-rivals. However, former Pakistan cricketer Bazid Khan believes there is one weak spot India need to address – the form of captain Suryakumar Yadav against Pakistan. “Suryakumar scores runs everywhere, but against Pakistan, he has not looked effective. Whether it is the pace attack or something else, it remains an issue,” Bazid told Geo Super. Despite being one of the most explosive batters in T20 cricket, Suryakumar has struggled against Pakistan, managing only 64 runs in five innings at an average of 12.80 with a strike rate of 118.51. His scores against them read 11, 18, 13, 15 and 7 across three T20 World Cups (2021, 2022, 2024) and the 2022 Asia Cup. Notably, he has never crossed the 20-run mark against the Men in Green. As India prepare for the Asia Cup, all eyes will be on their skipper to break this trend and deliver when it matters most.

Chennai: Actor Sivakarthikeyan's latest psychological action thriller, 'Madharaasi,' directed by AR Murugadoss, has made a decent start at the Tamil Nadu box office, grossing an estimated ₹10 crore on its opening day. Produced by Sri Lakshmi Movies, the film features Sivakarthikeyan in the lead role, alongside Vidyut Jammwal and Rukmini Vasanth. 'Madharaasi' marks Sivakarthikeyan's return to the big screen following his blockbuster military drama, 'Amaran'. The film, which registered average advance sales, received a mixed initial response from both audiences and critics. The performance of 'Madharaasi' is particularly significant for director AR Murugadoss, as his previous directorial ventures, including the Salman Khan starrer 'Sikandar,' had reportedly failed to meet expectations. A strong showing for 'Madharaasi' over the weekend and into the weekdays is crucial for the film to achieve a positive theatrical verdict. Despite the mixed initial reactions, the film has shown promising trends in advance bookings for its second day in Tamil Nadu. 'Madharaasi' has polled approximately ₹4.60 crore from over 380 cinemas, indicating an encouraging 85 percent hold from its opening day advance sales. For sustained success, the action thriller will need to demonstrate better leg on weekdays and attract more audiences.

He will also direct that Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth be known as Secretary of War. The text of the executive order reads: "The name 'Department of War' conveys a stronger message of readiness and resolve compared to 'Department of Defense,' which emphasizes only defensive capabilities."
